Fugitive Captured After Taunting Law‐ Enforcement on Social Media

KANKAKEE, IL-  A fugitive, who taunted the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office by posting on her SnapChat, “Marcoo Polooo.  Come Find Me.” was apprehended Saturday in Tampa Bay, FL.  Alyssa M Smith, 22 of Kankakee, IL, was taken into custody on her outstanding warrant for Driving Under the Influence.

The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office has gained attention recently by their use of, “#WarrantWednesday”, a recent social media phenomenon where the public can see information about fugitives from the law and see their corresponding mug shots.

“We are absolutely amazed at the overwhelming response we’ve received from our constituents regarding #WarrantWednesday,” stated Kankakee County Undersheriff Mike Downey.  “We’ve even noticed that some of our regular fugitives are calling in on Tuesday to check their status in hopes of evading a future post the next day.  The use of social media in today’s law enforcement arena is such an outstanding tool.  Not only does it keep the public informed of things in their area’s of interest, but also allows them to interact, sometimes anonymously, with law enforcement without having to feel burdensome.”

“We thank the Tampa PD and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in apprehending Smith.  Despite the fact that Smith’s warrant was relatively minor considering some of our more serious felony warrants, her story goes to show other fugitives hiding from justice that you simply can’t escape social media and the community as a whole.” Undersheriff Downey continued.
