Officer August Dickman was assigned to the night shift and was near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Court Street when he was alerted to a disturbance. Five men were surrounding Archie Hutchins, who was armed with a pistol. Hitchins fired two rounds in the air. As Officer Dickman made his way across the street Hutchins ran to the corner and swung around a telephone pole and fired another shot. That shot struck Officer Dickman in the chest, killing him.
