Three Arrested Following Home Invasion in Rural Kankakee

Shortly after noon on February 10, 2025, deputies were dispatched to a residence on North Pearl Street in rural Kankakee in response to a reported home invasion. According to the homeowner, an individual posing as an Uber Eats representative approached his door. As the homeowner engaged with the suspect, two additional individuals forced their way inside. The suspects then restrained the homeowner with zip-ties and proceeded to ransack the residence, stealing electronics, cash, and multiple firearms—including handguns and rifles—before fleeing the scene.

Following a swift investigation, sheriff’s deputies arrested 41-year-old Marcus A. Phelan of Kankakee, 38-year-old James E. Schoeberl II of St. Anne, and 29-year-old Ryan A. McManimen of Bourbonnais, all charged with Home Invasion. Phelan, who was armed at the time of his arrest, was also taken into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant from Morgan County, Illinois. In addition to the arrests, deputies recovered multiple stolen items.

“I want to commend our investigators for their outstanding work in quickly identifying and apprehending these individuals,” said Sheriff Mike Downey. “The ability to recover stolen property—including dangerous firearms—and bring these suspects into custody so swiftly is a testament to their dedication. I also want to recognize the invaluable support from the Kankakee Police/Fire Departments, the Kankakee County Emergency Response Team, and the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office in bringing this case to resolution.”

All three suspects remain incarcerated at the Jerome Combs Detention Center, awaiting their detention hearing before a Kankakee County judge. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
