Scam Alert 7/3/14
Sheriff Tim Bukowski and the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office are warning the community of a recent scam that has been reported in our area. A relative of one of our Sheriff’s Deputies received a call earlier this morning from someone claiming to be a Lieutenant from the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division. Since that time, we have received numerous similar complaints.
After referring to our investigations division regarding the call and providing detectives with the phone number for which the call originated, it was determined to come from a number in Georgia. The scammers on the phone are reportedly advising victims that they missed jury duty and must pay via Green Dot Money Pak or risk being incarcerated for an outstanding warrant.
While investigators continue to look into this particular issue, we wanted to make sure everyone was aware of this scam. Please remember, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office would NEVER ask someone for money
over the phone, whether it be in an effort to eliminate an outstanding arrest warrant or any other matter.
If you have received a suspicious call similar in nature or any other call that you feel may be a scam, we encourage you to contact your local police agency.
