Sheriff’s Deputies Take Three Burglary Suspects Into Custody After They’re Caught In The Act

December 10, 2018 – Kankakee, IL – Live, video surveillance of a local business resulted in the apprehension of three burglary suspects early yesterday morning. At approximately 2:48 am, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a business in the 400 block of North Oak Street in Chebanse after the business owner received a notification on his phone and observed the incident via a live-stream. After conveying the information to KanComm dispatchers, our deputies, at least one of whom was assigned to the Village of Chebanse at the time, quickly arrived on scene and located, 38 year-old William R Oiler of East Chicago, IN; 42 year-old Edward F Gee of Hazel Crest, IL; and, 43 year-old Sharon V McCambry, also of Hazel Crest, IL.
As deputies attempted to stop the suspects in their vehicle, Oiler, who was driving the vehicle, attempted to flee striking one of the officers on scene. After a brief pursuit, all three were apprehended on Interstate 57 and, subsequently, booked in to the Jerome Combs Detention Center on a host of charges including: Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Felony Theft, Criminal Damage, Trespassing, Fleeing/Eluding, Reckless Driving, as well as traffic offenses and outstanding arrest warrants.
“As a result of our great relationship and cooperation with the Village of Chebanse, we were fortunate enough to have deputies assigned at the time of the incident, which undoubtedly assisted in the quick apprehensions,” said Sheriff Mike Downey. “Additionally, I commend the business owner, not only for having such a great video-surveillance system, but also for working with KanComm to provide specific information regarding the suspects for our responding officers.”
